Our history (according to Lee)
Free Flight Academy was an idea that grew from conversations between myself and my good friend Akis.
I met Akis when I moved to Algodonales in 2007 to work with one of largest BHPA schools. Over the next few years, we often spoke about running trips together; our passion was paragliding and we felt we had the right combination of experience and enthusiasm to do it ‘better’. When Fiona joined the discussions in 2012, she brought with her the financial and administrative knowhow Akis and I had always managed to avoid talking about and within two years we were up and running.

Twelve years later we have grown our international team with some of the best paragliding guides and instructors around. Together we love exploring both well established and new paragliding locations alike. I can truly say I am blessed to be one of those people in life who gets to do what they love as a career and I hope when you fly with us you can see this translates into everything we do.

My only regret is Akis now has a ‘proper’ job but that doesn’t mean we don’t continually try to persuade him to come back for ‘just one more trip’!

Lee Tryhorn
BHPA Chief Flying Instructor & School Owner
Lee has been flying & teaching paragliding since 2005. His main drive is Acrobatic paragliding which has given him a passion for teaching security in flight and glider control clinics. He is a Chief Flying instructor with the BHPA and with a naturally calm and patient personality he specialises in progressing low air time & low confidence pilots. Lee has a high level of experience in running trips abroad and enjoys opening up new paragliding experiences for pilots. Lee is also an experienced tandem pilot and SIV instructor.

Fiona Tryhorn
The Boss
Qualified in 2011, Fiona has had a nine year break in flying and is no longer out on trips as she is kept busy looking after our adventurous nine year old daughter. Her organisation skills however are still second to none and if you need a speedy response it is likely to be her who contacts you first. If you venture on a trip to Algodonales she will look forward to meeting you in person and hopes to be back in the air soon.

Richard Dolan
SIV Instructor & XC Guide
Rich started paramotoring in 2016 and since then he has been hooked on flying. After taking his first SIV in 2018 he found acrobatic paragliding and this fuelled his love for the sport even more. Flying has taken him all over the world to places such as Kuwait, Egypt, Colombia and most recently Australia, where he travelled unsupported across the entire width via paramotor. Rich has spent some time as a trainee instructor in both paragliding and paramotoring and is pursuing further qualifications. He has a wide range of experience to tap into and offers a calming presence on launch and in the air.

Alex Schweig
XC Guide & Tandem PIlot
Originally from Peru but now based in the Austrian Alps, Alex can be found on several of the Free Flight Academy trips. A dedicated XC competition pilot, aerobatic pilot and hike and fly enthusiast there isn't much about paragliding that Alex doesn't know and love. Alex's adventurous spirit and endless enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge and passion for free flight makes him an excellent guide....oh and if he ever offers to cook for you, take him up on the offer as he cooks as well as he flies!

Belen Chiuki
XC Guide & SIV Videographer
Belen is the new to the Free Flight Academy team in 2026. Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina she currently splits her time between South America and Europe. She learnt to fly in 2019 in Lima and since then paragliding has become an important part of her life; with ground handling, coastal soaring and parakiting being her main passions. Belen has a calm, open and friendly personality which helps even the most nervous pilot feel relaxed on launch. Not only that but Belen's other passion is teaching yoga, particularly using yoga to help people through injuries, so we count ourselves very lucky when she is part of our team.

Oniver
XC Guide & Tandem PIlot
Oneiver is the newest member of the team. He is an accomplished tandem pilot and instructor who has been leading flying tours in his home country since 2019. Passionate about sharing the skies, he uses the off-season for solo flying, honing his ability to read the atmosphere and terrain—a skill so sharp others jokingly comment on his incredible "luck" in finding thermals. His greatest satisfaction comes from putting that experience to work for other pilots, helping them safely complete long-distances.
